The SOP/SES does teach that kids are born with certain predispositions from past lives, and that the more desirable of these are to be encouraged and drawn out, and the less desirable are to be "disencouraged". Note they are seen as predispositions, not set in concrete. If anything, nurture is seen...

Several angry responses ... I don't expect to get any more understanding here than usual - and I understand the nature of this BB and why that's so - but that's how I see it. Nice one, thats a very positive and helpful remark. I prefer genuine honest anger to snide put downs such as that. If it was...

Re: 'preserving knowledge'

Bella, I don't even have Discovery channel -- do you ridicule their documentaries ? Your "preservation of knowledge" in monastries is only very partially true -- a lot of the transcription of Biblical texts was carried out on parchment previously preserved from earlier times and carrying really pri...

I do not know the motivation of the Khmer Rouge - I suspect there is some sort of animism or Shinto like ancestor worship (or worship of the "ancient ways") that they admired and wanted to return to -- hence year zero. Best not to guess. North Korea is definitely ancestor worship, animism and the cu...

Re: causation.....or? coincidence.

- the dark ages were the most religiously fervent in European history and stagnated the advance of the leading civilization for hundreds of years whilst everything went into building churches, funding monastries, dunking witches and waging crusades Quite the opposite. The monasteries were often imp...

Re: causation.....or? coincidence.

GB - no, causation is itself only a working presumption which, like gravity ,seems to work pretty well much of the time . Celia et al, I don't think any humanist, athesistic or non religious movement or nation has engaged in organized murder (war or terrorism etc ) which tends to support the correla...

fair enough. My main point is that it is possible to force people to meditate if the definition of what constitutes meditation includes simply describing the physical aspects, as it often meant in St James, especially to those not initiated into Tm.

In reality, though, TM can be what you want it to be TM can be what you want it to be, therefore it can be anything, including sitting still with eyes closed not moving, letting thoughts freely wander. For those not initiated into TM our meditation consisted of being made to sit motionless with our...

OK, then I suggest Daffy's statement "I was physically dragged into classrooms on many occasions to meditate" be rephrased to "I was physically dragged into classrooms on many occasions to waste my time sitting there doing nothing, as it was clear I couldn't be made to meditate." As you said before...

qualified? Where did the members of the committee get their meditation qualifications? I wonder where.....let me guess.....

Must be easy in any case to get a qualification on a subject that can be whatever you want it to.

yes it makes sense, you want to have your cake and eat it.

The principle and co -founder of the $300.000 awarded Tm Nataki Talibah school mentioned in the article happens to be a panelist of the Maharishi funded stress free schools committee. Go figure. If your interested in *facts*.

I have read the article that you linked to. It's interesting but hardly convincing. It's just a media report of a study. Actually it's not even that. It was written by the "committee for stress free schools" a Maharishi funded group. There is a link at the top of the article. A study in 2003 found ...

leon, your logic is twisted. If the article is written by a biased person, that does not make the article itself biased or any points raised in it unfair. It's like claiming a charged criminal will always give biased evidence under oath. I wish I had more relevant examples at hand, but your implica...

This is where a child spaces out during conversations and the mind goes elsewhere. Th...
