I don't think I made myself clear when I said, "For given another context, another culture and another way of living, the same ideas can have very different effects." I never implied the angry parent wasn't talking about a specific school, a specific place, a specific time. What I mean is ...

Matthew, it seems you still think I'm trying to defend the SES! I don't know much about Erasmus and have only read a small number of accounts of the school. Sorry. Regarding "nitpicking at side-issues", I believe the beauty of online message boards is that side-issues can be discussed and ...

Mine wasn't a straw man argument - it was a genuine question. Do hindus teach "the perfect etc" verse to their children. Do hindus teach their children to sit still for long periods of time. Firstly, Hindus are not a homogeneous group - I don't think this is the place to discuss the varyi...

Yes by all means ask people to support their views with reasons but please be careful in the use of adjectives used to describe the authors of particular views. This seems to be targeted directly and solely at my impression of what the angry parent wrote. Therefore, Bonsai, I'm afraid you have inad...

However, is it not quite a jump to assume that the teaching of the "This is perfect etc" verse and teaching sitting still for long periods of time to very young children, is a bona fide Hindu practice? It isn't quite a jump when you are a Hindu and have, along with many other Hindus you k...

Nor am I here to defend the SES. I have never joined or considered joining the SES, nor have any of my relatives. I only feel that when one chooses to openly criticize a religion, race or any denomination - implicitly or explicitly - one should explain their reasoning. Otherwise they risk being cons...

the same tired and lame arguments by SES defenders Grow up, Matthew. I'm trying to hold a reasonable debate. The angry parent doesn't say the verse is nonsensical to children, he/she says they are nonsensical, full stop. And that sitting still for 10 or 15 minutes is an unreasonable period of time ...

I never implied so or otherwise. I only made my point because the practices trivialised and disparaged by the angry parent are endorsed by Hinduism. Whether this is the reason why they are followed by the SES is another matter.

I agree that religious beliefs and practices should be debated. Only then do they have any real significance. But I disagree about your point that context justifies the statement. In any way I read that paragraph, it points to a very narrow minded view. If you are going to make such an overarching c...

The children are made to recite nonsensical verses such as "This is perfect, That is perfect, Take perfect from perfect and the remainder is perfect". They are made to repeat sounds over and over and to sit perfectly still for unreasonable periods at a time. I can empathise with everythin...

Mr Capper was, in my experience, a fantastic classics teacher. He was fair but firm, and it was a pleasure to be taught by him. Note that this is the impression he left on me ; others will disagree. As the article linked by Jo-Anne says, the Cappers haven't been connected with the SES for several ye...

Re: school alternatives

are there any good schools which still have free spaces for St James school victims in West London ? Nope, bad luck! Local schools dont give sympathy places out to kids who dont have anything wrong with them! Sam's answering rudeness with rudeness (I don't think James' snide remark can be taken any...

It is also worthwhile noting that this arrogance and condescending manner has also been displayed most recently by Mr Boddy and his potters wheel analogy and by all the governors of the schools who to this day still harbour teachers who have been found guilty of cruelty towards children. Perhaps yo...

Personally, I feel your remark reeks of the arrogance and condescending manner often associated with some members of your most unpleasant group, and which I have unfortunately been subjected to more than once. Personally, I feel Bella's remark is perfectly justified. Just because she doesn't agree ...

It is a dangerous assumption to believe everybody in an organisation is a well-balanced individual. Why limit this to people in organisations? By your reasoning, Alban, would you say that nobody should ever give any advice to people belonging to an organisation? Because just about any advice or rec...
