Yes, and it's the 'finer' details that are so worrying. For a start you might like to read the student testimonials on the JC site (girls 10 years old) about how wonderful it was to have the special lessons in 'obeying'. You mean http://johncolet.nsw.edu.au/Articles/seniorgirlsphilosophy.html which...

I hope you find/have found a good school for your son. Thanks for the unexpected well wishes -- I hope that John Colet works out for him as well; its only been a couple of weeks, and they seem to be a better match so far. (Appreciated too, as you were initially coming across a bit negative -- it se...

The thing is sly, the SOP/SES/SoES claim most vehmently they are NOT a 'religion'. Philosophy, religion -- difficult to define the difference. Western philosophy in generally regarded as separate from religion, particularly the dominent Abrahamic religions, although questions such as whether God ex...

If you can share, what issues have arisen with your son that you are looking to withdraw him? Without going into too much detail, my son is both gifted and has some associated behaviour problems. The school was not dealing well with them, and did not seem at all to be addressing his strengths. For ...

The above questions are incorrectly attributed to me. I think Goblinboy asked them. My bad. Too many cut and paste. This (as far as I can tell Religious Belief) has very little to do with providing an standard of education necessary for children to grow into good upstanding citizens and to be able ...

Thank you sly - a nice bit of net-searching/fact finding there. And welcome to the board. Can I ask where your interest in this board stems from? Most directly, I came across this board whilst researching a school for my son. I came across John Colet (Sydney, Australia) via the NSW Gifted and Talen...

Re: ses science
Tom, just looked at the John Colet science curriculum on electricity -- thanks for the address; I cannot understand how the '9 Vedic elements' can be taught in a contemporary science education -- also their text reference on static electricity dating from 1904. If anyone still has a copy of the men...

That certainly seems to be a lot less whooly than St James (juniors) own website (2006): ... Are they both describing the same school? I think you were just looking at the wrong part of their web site. The connection with the SES/SOP seems pretty clear. See the History section for: St James Schools...

Re: Cult-like similarities
Saw the Channel 4 documentary by Mark Dowd on Opus Dei last night, and was struck by numerous similarities in the apparent behaviour of the Catholic sect and the SES/SEOS/SOP (tick where applicable). In general, religious based schools are obviously designed to promote their religion, hopefully in ...

Re: Contact The Age
Wonder if Claire Halliday takes evening philosophy classes? Doing a search on her name (within AU) seems to have a large number of hits across a wide variety of topics; she pretty much just seems to be a career journalist. For example, here's an article she did on Swingers :-) http://www.theage.com...

TD - as you are in the biz, do you know if there is a way to find out home much Federal and State money the SES primary schools are being given? Also is it possible to find out their scores on Basic Skills Test (NSW) and AIMS (Vic)? See my post (probably the one above) for the NSW BST info I found ...

(regarding John Colet School, in Belrose, Sydney, Australia) It is known in the area as the school you DON'T send kids too if you want them to 'learn to read and write and do maths'. Interesting -- I was under the impression that the school generally did better than average in these skill areas. At ...

The Waterperry Declaration
As a general discussion, I was wondering what peoples thoughts were on the Waterperry Declaration -- http://www.schooleconomicscience.org/economics/waterperry.htm A genuine attempt? Valid economics? A cult trying to gain some good publicity? An eastern (Hindu) religion simply misunderstood by the we...
