Re: Coming to terms with stupidity

Someone did mention much earlier in the WATD forum What's the WATD forum? But all that was so long ago and at the time most of us believed that we were doing 'holy' work to 'save the planet oops, sorry .. the world'. Isn't it amazing how they dress totally mundane pointless work up as being importa...

Re: SES Advertising

What would happen if we put "RUBBISH" on the advertisements in the tubes? If we put, "DON'T JOIN THEM!" it might interest people too much who saw the ads... I'm not sure that is a good approach whether you got caught or not. I like to think I am a much better more community awar...

Re: SES Advertising

The abuse of the words 'happy' and 'freedom' will turn many people away cringing and then laughing in disbelief. In Melbourne and possibly elsewhere they ran ads with the headline "When was the last time you felt this free?" accompanied by the picture of a child on a beach throwing their ...

Re: SES Advertising

The whole thing makes me fume. It's so misleading! It catches people because it is not what it seems. Bonsai Quite right. My experience is that once the initial buzz wears off people in the school are actually more miserable than people not in the school. You should see a tutors' meeting! A more do...

Of course! That's where he got it from!

Re: Coming to terms with stupidity

This is so accurate. And the low self-esteem can flip easily into egomania. The rush you get from that high of 'being special' is also very addictive. I recognise that it was my own low self-esteem which made me such good fodder! But- importantly - that self-esteem was never raised in School, but h...

Re: Laughter is the best medicine

After residentials and the diet of mostly bread and cheese I found myself to be constipated when returning home. Wonder how many other philosophy students had the same complaint? I certainly did. After a residential I used to go to a steak house and have a huge hit of red meat to get back to normal...

Atkinson on Corporal Punishment

I hope this is not in bad taste but I found it hilarious:

Listening to Debenham it strikes me that Atkinson is doing a perfect parody.

Re: Laughter is the best medicine

In fact "get up when you wake up" was actually advice to MacLaren when he was in his "lounge around all day in bed" mode. It was just his guru telling him to get the hell up, bathe, dress and get on with it. Just as one would tell a surly adolescent. Thanks Free. I love it. Now ...

Re: Laughter is the best medicine

...how long it should take for a 'lady' to do a poo! Too much information! Wow!! Hilarious!!! And just a bit creepy. I remember being give the edict: "Get up when you wake up." Being a good philosopher I took it to theart. The first night I woke (nature called) and then realised that now ...

Re: Coming to terms with stupidity

Firstly, the sense of "stupidity" can cause disenchanted cult members to go through very serious denial - they think they'll lose face if they leave the cult, they are terrified of their pride taking a knock. So they sit it out, lying to themselves and everybody else that they really beli...

Re: The Wisdom of Nicholas Debenham

What a queer old fossil Debenham is. A true eccentric. Of course children need discipline. But to jump from that and say they therefore need caning is a bridge too far. A friend who taught for 30 years says that the need to resort to corporal punishment is the hallmark of an inept teacher. What a sh...

Laughter is the best medicine

Not so funny in the original if you were subjected to it though.....if you were a woman that is! The way of talking and the patronising nature of the advice are pretty funny in retrospect although I remember sitting through such talks and finding them rivetting. What was I thinking? My funny story ...

Laughter is the best medicine

One response to the lunacy that goes on at the School is to laugh. In fact it may even be therapeutic to do so! So, let's see who can come up with the most ridiculous story re the School and its leaders. I'll open the batting. Once while on residential in Melbourne Mr Lambie tripped over and injured...
