TB, thank you for that. We seem to have wandered somewhat off-topic but speaking personally I nonetheless find your TRC/Africa insights interesting and informative. Quote:- "Our need for truth appears to be universal, systems either exist to verify it, or they assume it." Sorry but this kind of thin...

Sarah and Andrew thank you both very much for your very moving and accurate accounts of what daily life at St James/Vedast/ girls/boys schools was once like. Firstly, I would like to say that although I understand and respect the decision by many contributers to remain anonymous I would urge you to ...

TB, I am drawing a parallel only in so far as the the principles of the TRC and this inquiry are both to do with the seeking of truth and reconciliation. You were in SA at the time, I have relatives that were there but I was not. Perhaps you would care to expand on why you think it is such a mislead...

But perhaps the idea in principle was right even if it wasn't perfectly executed in every case.

Re: time

Click on 'Profile' at the top, then scroll down to 'Timezone' and enter your correct setting there depending on where you are in the world. For example London is GMT + 1 Hour. Problem solved!

I remember one trip to the countryside a friend and I devised a game while the class was at the beach. Lets swim out to sea,and the person who turns back first was the chicken. We swam out for ages! totally lost sight of land, were subsequently swept a mile or so down the beach as we batlled back t...

In addition to these examples another highly successful one, albeit on a different scale, was The Truth and Reconciliation Commision instituted by Nelson Mandela at the end of Apartheid in South Africa. It enabled many thousands of victims of torture and brutality, as well as their perpetrators, to ...

Re: Barry Barber

I am heartened to read this praise for Barry Barber. I wish I could say he was like this in the first 2 to 3 years of St Vedast. It seems he may have gone on to reform himself (or at least with some of the boys) and this is good to learn. Once again I would like to accept and thank him for his apolo...

Re: St. Vedast

Dear Mr Barber Thank you, your apology is both welcome and appreciated. About 25 years too late, but appreciated nonetheless. And as they say, better late than never at all. On reading what you say, it does appear to have a tone of truthfulness and honesty about it, but to be completely assured of y...

I wish to amend my above posting as follows:- I would fully endorse every word of the last post by Lowpass. From the age of eight I witnessed and was subjected to identical levels of 'punishment'. My brother and I were at St Vedast from day 1, September 1975. One of the unfortunate 50 or so guinea p...

Good luck in your pursuit of an apology. Those ex 'teachers' should be jailed. Thank you for your post "A horrified guest". I agree with you, they probably should be jailed for all the terrible harm they inflicted on defenceless, innocent children. The reality is that some of these men are not even...

Re: some cannot speak

some arn't ready to give testimonials on this site - particularly since the ses heirarchy are obviously onto it! Even if it meant being protected by an anonymous handle? And if the SES are monitoring this, is that not all the more reason for survivors to come forward with their stories? Of course I...

A lot of attention has been focused on ND, and quite rightly so, because he was presiding over this regime. However, I personally feel just as much (if not more) anger at those teachers who made the classroom a fearful place day-in, day-out. Apart from the physical abuse, how is that conducive to l...
