Re: Katharine Watson

I never knew her, but she was obviously a good soul. Could I dare as a newbie ask Tom Grubb a question through this thread? Please do! I have spent many weeks reading all the posts on this site and I do not know if Tom's parents put him into St. Vedast and what connection his parents may or may not...

Re: Katharine Watson

This is sad news. Katharine and I didn't agree on much but she was brave enough to join in the debate, which meant a lot.

Re: 'Shame on You' by Clara Salaman

Just finished 'Shame on You'. What a wonderful book! It's a very emotional read. I found some passages, particularly descriptions of the school buildings and the mannerisms of certain teachers, quite painful to read because of the powerful memories they evoked. The more obviously fictional parts of ...

Re: 'Shame on You' by Clara Salaman

How interesting! On the website link that Tom posted, the ERT says that she pulled out "because of the death of her son". Maybe that's the reason she gave them, I suppose, but if not, then they really are shameless in exploiting her personal tragedy to make themselves look better. I wonde...

Re: 'Shame on You' by Clara Salaman

Yes, I sensed that she wanted to say much more but was hampered by "legal reasons". Interesting that she was interviewed by Libby Purves, who was scheduled to be a key speaker at a conference organised by the SES's Education Renaissance Trust back in 2006. She pulled out. http://www.educat...

Re: Family values

I particularly like the quote about the need for suffering to be recognised. I think we all felt a sense of relief when Mr Townend actually acknowleged our suffering in the inquiry report, but then to have it ignored and even denied (despite all evidence) by the SES after we'd "swum around in ...

Re: Biography of Leon MacLaren

There are number of passages which refer to the day schools, but the book makes it appear that he did not interfere too much and left those responsible to deal with their running. Hmm... I wonder. I have been told by a former St Vedast teacher that the 'harsh treatment' (i.e. vicious child abuse) t...

Re: Biography of Leon MacLaren

Well, someone likes it so much that he's given it a five-star review before he's even finished reading it - on the British and the American Amazon site: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Power-Within-Leon-Maclaren-Memior/dp/1439210306/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1239304051&sr=8-1 and http://www...

Biography of Leon MacLaren

The MacLaren Foundation ( http://www.maclarenfoundation.net/index.asp ) have sent out the email below. If you can judge a book by its cover, this one looks like an uncritical hagiography. I hope I'm wrong. Dear All, We are pleased to announce that the biography of Leon MacLaren, The Power Within, Le...

Re: Closure

Pablo, I just want to say thank you for your brave posts. Reading them has been a moving and ultimately very positive experience for me and I'm sure that many other people have been, and will be, similarly affected by them.

Thank you!

Nice find! It's ironic that the Times used to be the SES's favoured newspaper. Shame the article fizzles out so suddenly, though.
