Re: Just for fun...really?
I first came across the 'boiling frogs' analogy in my first job out of univ - predictably for one so ignorant I was working as a kind of management consultant. Our organization drew on the work of a management guru name of Michael, er ... anyway, he was head of a prestigious organization in Switzerl...

Re: Just for fun...really?
Thanks Bluemoon for that reminder of the announcement, which is very equivocal and half-hearted, and consequently confusing. In a way it serves as an illustration of my point about the change in the SES. In the old days everything was very black and white ... nowadays there are grey areas everywhere...

Re: Just for fun...really?
Hi Bluemoon I'm sure we must know each other - perhaps you should PM me. I don't really care to justify myself by saying what my involvement was. My only thought was to bring in some sense of perspective. If Iwonder is concerned about a family member, then he or she isn't going to go along and get s...

Re: Just for fun...really?
Hello iwonder I can't speak about the Australian organization, but had over 20 years experience till recently in the UK one, which is the centre to which it defers. I think that it's necessary to discriminate between the various NRMs because there is a spectrum. It's wrong to imagine that they're al...

Re: SES / SoPP in New York Observer Magazine
I thought the article was quite mean-spirited, and lazy - the way it criticises people's clothes, their BO, their 'squawking' voices - both SES people and their part 1 students. Feels a bit like shooting fish in a barrel. I even started to feel sorry for everyone involved. I did laugh at the comment...

Re: The SES and Regional Schools in England
Yea, people sometimes stayed at Oxford Brookes, which has its halls about a mile away.

Re: The SES and Regional Schools in England
wonder how many they managed to get from Oxford, given the proximity of Waterperry Er, none. In all the years I was associated with Waterperry, not one Oxford student that I was aware of took more than a passing interest, except those involved before they went. You seem to imagine the SES 'penetrat...

Goblinboy,
For some reason I can't reply to your PM - my replies and new PMs just go into my outbox. I've tried a couple of different browsers.

Re: Where I'm at
I've a hunch that if the tutor was the kind of person who could have replied to you "Why do you think?", and encourage you to hone your independent observational faculties - instead of claiming he was going bestow knowledge onto you - he might not have later had an emotional breakdown. I ...

Re: Where I'm at
AT, Yes, I think we are in agreement really. It's the grey areas that are the most interesting to me, so I hope you'll excuse my fussing over details. ;-) I'm sure he did know more about me, since I was a 17 year old with very little knowledge of anything - and even less awareness of my own ignoranc...

Re: Where I'm at
GoblinBoy, Thanks, that's very kind of you. It's good to hear from you, as always. AT, I was only partly taking issue with part of what you said. I think your main points are right and I think the advice you mention would have been useful to hear. I just don't think 'surrender' is (C) SES. They didn...

Re: Where I'm at
Hello Carolyn I was very moved by reading what you wrote. I was in the SES about as long as you, although I joined as an adult. We may have crossed paths in the 90s, I'm not sure. I suppose what rings true in what you say is the mixture of feelings that the SES appears to have left you with. There's...

I woke up this morning and all I could think was of all the things I could have been doing yesterday with people who love and care about me, rather than spending time here. So I'm just going to tie up some loose ends and bow out. Tom, I was interested to see your response and had meant to get back t...
