Here's one for you GD

Attributed to the Dalai Lama: "My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness".

Oh to be able to remember that more often.

And one from me .. I just came across today.

"I have learned silence from the talkative,
tolerance from the intolerant and
kindness from the unkind.
I should not be ungrateful to these teachers."

~~ Kahil Gibran ~~

All the best GD

Thank you GD, it is good to reminded of positive and caring people. I was a fan of Bob's back in the day. No Woman no Cry was a favourite.

So, One Love back to you. And on St. Valentines Day.He seems to have forgotten me again this year, but never mind I'll survive. Now there's a song for ex-SESers!!

kindness regards

Hello NJ/GD

Gerasene Demon wrote:I have started to read “The Art of Happiness” a handbook for living, by HH Dalai Lama & Howard C. Cutler. It has made immediate sense to me and is, “Dedicated to the reader: May you find happiness”, which is nice. I recommend it.

I'm pleased you find this book useful. My favourite parts come early on (pp4-6) where Cutler, (who is a psychiatrist), describes the difficult behaviour of a client to the Dalai Lama, then asks him if "he had an explanation for this behaviour and what advice he could offer. I was taken aback when after a long pause and reflection, he simply said ‘I don’t know,’ and shrugging his shoulders, laughed good-naturedly”. Cutler describes his surprise and disappointment at not receiving “a more concrete response”. The DL goes on to explain that “the basic premises and parameters set up by Western science can limit your ability to deal with certain realities” (IMO it would have been good if Cutler had asked HH to give examples of those “realities”) and that “when you encounter phenomena that you cannot account for, then there’s a kind of tension created, it’s almost a feeling of agony”.

I think becoming comfortable with uncertainty and ambiguity is a key to finding happiness.

All the best to you.

I began doing Mindfulness meditation about 3 months ago, as part of my attempts to manage my chronic pain. I did a free 11 week course at my local NHS Pain Clinic.

At first, the meditation freaked me out a bit (particularly doing it in a group) but the tutors were aware of my history (it helped that all three were psychologists) and were incredibly supportive.

Gradually, I have been able to let go of my past and focus on the here and now, which has helped me so much!

I now meditate twice a day, sometimes using guided meditations and sometimes not. It has really helped me to become calmer, cope with my daily pain better and generally feel more positive.

I will be eternally grateful for the support and encouragement of the tutors and also my fellow pain sufferers, for helping me to get past my negative associations with meditation and find positive ones.

I wanted to share this experience on this thread to let other child survivors of St J/St V that it is possible to use meditation to help you cope with your experiences, as long as you do it in a safe environment, where the people who are helping you know what you've been through.
