Some pearls of wisdom from Noddy here:

Please post your links to, or recollections of, further gems from Britain's least progressive ex-headmaster.

I remember reading this article at school at the time it was published and thinking it was funny.

Thanks for flagging that up Sam.

The ‘discipline’ was to make them 'strong' he claims? I don't think so. Here is where I think Clara has got it spot on. It was to make them weak, to make them conform, to make them controlable that the 'heavy' discipline and humiliation tactics were used. To try to break their spirits, especially the girls. All for the purposes of the 'social order' that was 'Whopper’s' vision. Those of you that survived it and have told your stories here are not weak. You all deserve medals.

Nicholas Debenham believes in what he did presumably. How can he ever 'apologise'?

I’m so sorry for all of you.

Classic stuff!

"I still frown on pop music. Heavy metal leads to drug-taking"

... well not in my case, unless by drug-taking you include consuming alcohol.

I love how heavy metal is classified as "pop" music. And I'm not sure what drugs he's thinking of but most heavy metal fans that I've met just drink beer. And occasionally smoke pot. But mostly beer.

What a queer old fossil Debenham is. A true eccentric.
Of course children need discipline. But to jump from that and say they therefore need caning is a bridge too far.
A friend who taught for 30 years says that the need to resort to corporal punishment is the hallmark of an inept teacher.
What a shame that such a deeply flawed man was ever put in charge of children.
Here is a little humourous parady of Debenham's type:
