Stanton wrote:? a bulletin board is so unlike other forms of communication. So unpredictable and ungovernable ? anybody could be out there ? but also engaging. Like treading on eggs. Over the last year I think I?ve begun to get the measure of it.

Just re-reading a few things on here - this stood out for some reason - probably because a web forum is something that is an antithesis of the SES culture - unpredictable & ungovernable

Update

I've been staring at this thread for some while and thinking what a pity it is that there has been nothing added recently - given its importance. There have been a number of new posters to this site since March - I have linked a few below. Maybe someone else can finish the job:

St Vedast Survivors 25 Year Reunion

Postby RobMac » Fri Nov 09, 2007 11:32 am

I am trying to organise a reunion of St Vedast Boys & Girls for sometime in spring or summer 2008 and expected to be in London.

In the abscence of something easier to use at present, I am coordinating it via Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=5885308005

If you are not a member of Facebook email me at robmacleod@hotmail.com so I can send you an invite (membership of Facebook is NOT required and your email address is partially obsfuscated)

For those people not living in the London area (or even the UK) I will, closer to the time, ask for dates you cannot make to try and take into account when choosing a date for the event.

Thanks
Rob Macleod

I have set it up so that you shouldn't need to be a member of Facebook.

The Yahoo group doesn't seem to work anymore without a Yahoo account and I have tried joining and subscribing without success.

If the Facebook event won't work for you as a non member just email me at robmacleod@hotmail.com.

Cheers
Rob

This may or may not be of help to families affected by the SES - it is the successor to FAIR and founded by a Conservative MP who is anti-cult. Worth a look.

I'm replying to myself - that fits the bill! The Eve of the 2010 election. Mr. Clegg practices T.M. (Oh yes, nice guy, he is a liberal and unconsciously probably has links with the SES old Liberal brigade. Mr. Cameron (sorry honest dave) will have some links with Mrs. Thatcher and her press man Mr. Boddy.
It can even get you through the election.!

Mr. Brown? Do not know. Of a presbyterian upbringing, can't find a real link to the SES but whoever is in Government after Thursday I will be lobbying against cults and especially the SES.

Take care and vote for whoever and whatever you beleive in. Freedom of mind etc. etc.

I've had a request from a long-standing contributor to this forum, and to this thread, to 'unsticky' it. For privacy reasons I won't repeat his reasons in full but in essence it is so that he can 'move on' without this thread being a constant reminder to himself and others of his experiences.

This just means that it will no longer automatically be at the top of the list of threads. It doesn't stop people reading or contributing to it.

Hi Daffy,

I can understand why this contributor feels this way, but I think it's a shame, as this thread is a useful reference to give people when I want them to read about what went on at the schools. For example, I referenced the thread in my recent letter to Australian GQ magazine, as I believe it shows the true horror of what went on in an easily readable format, and is easy to find when you first enter the site.

If the thread is "unstickied" then it won't be so easy for people like that to find when they come onto the site.

Obviously, you have to do what you think is best, but I wanted to give my opinion. I don't know if there is any other way it can be kept prominent without upsetting those contributors who, quite legitimately, are finding that it is stopping them from moving on.

I'd welcome other people's views on this as well. What do you think?

I concur with ET on this. It is core content and should be prominent.

Perhaps there is a way for the user to hide or block that thread from his account?

I'd also say, with the greatest respect and sympathy, that the cause of not being able to move on may be elsewhere, the cause may not be the layout of this forum. Personally, I've found that repositioning or hiding objects with difficult associations is not always the most helpful solution. Sometimes it is best to face them head on, with a trusted or loving person. Or rather, overcome the issues that the object represents, with a trusted or loving person. As soon as the object no longer distracts you, you have moved on. Just a thought.

Hi Daffy

On balance,if the leading thread upsets a long standing contributor I would be in favour of unstickying. The long standing members made the forum what it is and if unstickying helps someone, then why not. As you say, the thread will be available but not as up front.( Unstickying possibly reflects how the forum has moved on too).
It may even let GQ et al know that it is not just a few people going on about the bad old days, but shows that the forum addresses current issues that are very relevant to the existence of this organisation and others of the same vein.
It is probably more for the ex-pupils to comment on than the ex-adult members such as me, but hope this helps.
regards
